Anne Wright's Bio

Anne WrightI have always loved drawing but until about 15 years ago had never painted. An opportunity came up which meant I could at last learn how to paint. Since then I have gone on to using both oils and more recently pastels, which I really enjoy. I get a tremendous amount of enjoyment from painting and as a teacher for over 30 years hope to pass that on to other aspiring artists through art classes in my home studio.

I now live back in my hometown of St Bathans in Central Otago, across the road from where my father was born, and cannot imagine living anywhere else. Central Otago offers such a wealth of inspiration for painting and along with my inherited love for horses it’s hard to focus on anything else.

Mary Blyth's Bio

Mary Blyth

I started water colour painting in the 1990’s after a lifetime of knowing that I couldn’t draw. I enjoyed finding I could achieve a reasonable standard. I decided to try china painting and this is the medium I really enjoy, probably because I love flowers and this medium lends itself so well to painting them. The beauty of china painting is that you can try something, not like it and then clean it off leaving a pristine surface again. You can keep trying until you are happy with the result.

My latest skill is making pictures using serviettes. It is quick, easy and looks great. My other new skill is using fibres to create an endless variety of pictures. There are so many varied techniques you can lean for different effects.

Rachel Hodgkiss-Blyth's Bio

Rachel Hodgkiss-BlythI first started painting in Mackay in Australia when I attended classes at TAFE to learn how to use watercolours. On returning home to NZ with my family in 2005, we settled for a time in St. Bathans. Anne showed me her box of pastels and said have a try. Well I have been hooked ever since.

I really enjoy the immediacy of colour with pastels and the fact that they are instantly ready or can be put aside until later. A week’s course with Julie Greig really got me going with pastels and I haven’t looked back since although I also enjoy marrying them up with watercolour.

I enjoy painting the varied landscapes around Central Otago and particularly near Wanaka where I now live. Having lived in Brisbane for 17 years prior to St. Bathans, I relished having four seasons again and have never run out of inspiration. Each season has its own special beauty and Central Otago is a particularly special place to see them all.
